Washing Instructions

  1. Use a large washing machine without an agitator. The agitator will damage the membrane if the turnout gets twisted around it.
  2. Remove all straps and the fleece collar and wash separately.
  3. It is very important that you use a detergent that is labeled for use on waterproof and breathable fabrics. These are readily available at most stores if you read the labels. Normal detergent will leave a residue that damages the membrane.
  4. Wash in cold or warm water (not hot)
  5. We recommend hanging the turnout to dry but you can use a Dryer if the heat setting is on Low.
  6. If available in your area we recommend that you use a professional horse apparel laundry service.

Maintaining Waterproof Properties:

The outer shell of your turnout is treated with Teflon (silicone coating) to resist water and stains. The inner side of the fabric has a high tech waterproof/breathable membrane. The Teflon on the outer surface is not permanent and gradually deteriorates from exposure to the sun and rain. When the Teflon wears down and loses its water resistant properties the fabric will start getting wet when it rains. This does not affect the waterproof/breathable membrane on the inside but it does increase the weight of the turnout and decreases the performance. When this occurs we recommend that you apply a new silicone coating on the outer surface. Silicone spray is available at most stores and is easy to apply if you use a spray can. We recommend that you do this at the beginning of each season to maintain peak performance of the turnout. The brand we recommend is made by Atsko and it is available in the camping department at most Wal-Mart Super Centers. Cost is approximately $8.00 for a 12 oz can.
